Southend Hospital Charitable Foundation was founded in 1998 to mark the 50th Anniversary of the NHS and to continue the tradition upon which the hospital was built. The trustees at the time, as today, were a group of local people who cared greatly about Southend and wanted to help enhance the services that the hospital could provide.
During the last twenty years the charity has raised more than £4.8 million for the benefit of patients and staff. Past appeals have helped to fund the Lighthouse child development centre for children with disabilities, a £700,000 state-of-the-art cardiac monitoring system, and two new digital mammography machines through the Bosom Pals Appeal. More recently the Keyhole Cancer Appeal helped to create a laparoscopic theatre with one of the most advanced 3-D camera systems in Europe.
To mark 20 glorious years of fundraising by the Charitable Foundation, the trustees decided on something slightly different for their next major project and in June 2017 launched the For Wards Appeal to raise £500,000.
After asking clinical staff to identify 20 transformational projects across 20 different areas of the hospital, an Appeal Wish list was formed. Areas of the hospital set to benefit included theatres, radio and chemotherapy units, urology and haematology as well as our speech and language, audiology and medical photography services.
As always, the items are all things which the hard-pressed NHS budget provision just cannot stretch to, but which will make a world of difference to patients, their families and staff working in those areas.
We are delighted that thanks to our loyal supporters and fundraisers we have raised over £410,000 to date. Projects that we have funded recently include:
• £60,000 fully equipped bed for the new High Dependency Unit
• A disability accessible booth for Audiology
• Coin operated wheelchairs for A&E
• Brachytherapy suite prostate template
• Magic Carpet for the Children’s Lighthouse Centre
Our latest project is to purchase a £30,000 Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing machine (FEES) for patients experiencing swallowing difficulties or who are in danger of aspiration. The Fees Machine allows speech and language therapists to make assessments at the patient bedside rather than having to wait for X-rays and scans. The equipment will be used across the hospital, particularly supporting stroke and elderly patients so they can move off liquid and modified texture diets more quickly.
