Whilst ‘hospice’ is a word that can conjure up thoughts and feelings around death, Havens Hospices is trying to dispel those myths so it can provide more care for more people. Fair Havens originally opened its doors in 1983, in a converted house of Chalkwell Avenue, Since then, the hospice has cared for tens of thousands of local people from across Southend, Castle Point and Rochford, either within the In Patient Unit, through its Hospice at Home Service or other out-patient style services.
My name is Jackie Bliss, and I’m the CEO of HARP, Southend’s leading homelessness charity. At HARP, we know that homelessness is a key concern of residents in the City of Southend-on-Sea. When I was invited to write this piece for the Oracle, I jumped at the opportunity to provide readers with an update on homelessness in Southend.
This month has seen the latest week of targeted action to disrupt County Lines drugs dealing. As part of this work, officers carried out warrants at addresses in Southend, Westcliff, Leigh-on-Sea and Shoeburyness.
This is a take on a Jamie Oliver recipe. Slow roast shoulder is an utterly delicious way to eat lamb. It takes about 4 hours but just falls off the bone once it is ready. Teamed here with mashed root vegetables and a lovely gravy with mint and capers (leave out the capers if you prefer). Enjoy!
